I have been in this industry long enough to remember the birth of Geocities. I watched it grow, become overly crowded and fail. In a way GeoCities was the first of the social networking sites (this missing link).
I finally opened my latest addition of AdNews to read on the train this morning. A few pages in and I come across an article about MySpace being shadowed by Facebook. A Nielson/NetRatings Netview study thay have found Facebook has experienced 826% growth rate in the past 6 months. This is compared to 36% by MySpace.
But have another look and MySpace’s 3,000,000 visitors per month compared to facebooks 500,000 tells another story. If you also follow Bebo they had sudden growth and the flatlined over the past 12 months at just under a1,000,000 visits.
Out of interest refered to my online Oracle “Google Trends” I ran a query to compare between MySpace, Bebo and Facebook. The interest seems to be even greater than the Neilson report seems to indicate. By the Google graph facebook will catch MySpace within 12 months, even faster if people leave their MySpace to rot.
Is Facebook the better mousetrap?
