Firefox Ad Blocker – the start of things to come?

Posted September 5th @ 2:09 pm by Brett

A free add-on to Firefox could be opening a can of worms for online advertisers in the future. And without the revenue that the ads generate some of favourite websites will fail to exist.A new Firefox add-on will block all forms of advertising including Google Adwords. I don’t mind ad telling me I’ve won a luxury cruise of the Middle East being blocked! The consequences could see many of our favourite sites disappear from the Internet. The good news, websites such as www.kidspot.com.au will grow even faster as advertisers turn to sites that use advertising as content. Other sites as www.letsshop.com.au will also continue to grow.

This trend is following threat TV advertising by TIVO devices. Like TIVO the slow uptake will mean we are stuck with advertising for now. But those developing new social network sites will need to revisit

Firefox is now used by 35% of Internet traffic only a few points behind IE6 and 15% above IE7. So this could be something to be concerned about in the future.

For now I doubt that advertising revenue will be affected.
